Have you ever wondered what stocks top investor ‘Gurus’ are buying? There are a lot of ways to try and find out this kind of information but we like to follow it on GuruFocus.

The real value of this site is that it not only tracks buys/sells but it actually gives you an overview of each portfolio holding. Furthermore, you can even sign up for a free service and receive updated picks and news by email.

Mohnish Pabrai also talks about this site as one of his sources of information. Whilst, we do not recommend to simply buy whatever stock Gurus are buying, we like to use this site as a tool to check our investment ideas. We use it not only when we are considering taking a position in a company but also during our holding period, you would be surprised how you react differently to market movements if you see that – despite the stock moving against you – Gurus are moving WITH you.

Enjoy!

Despite not being about investing or the markets, we felt that readers could find this book quite interesting as it strives to ask the right questions and understand why and how events happen – something that is key for the Enterprising Investor.

As the authors state: “If morality represents an ideal world, then economics represent the actual world.” The book sets out to convince readers to become skeptical of conventional wisdom and addresses a number of questions with common sense and quantitative analysis to show us the hidden side of everything. For example:

  • What Do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers Have in Common?
  • How Is the Ku Klux Klan Like a Group of Real-Estate Agents?
  • Why Do Drug Dealers Still Live with Their Moms?
  • and many more….

In doing so, the authors manage to challenge this conventional wisdom and actually prove it wrong. OK, some of the findings are controversial but they are backed up by numbers and they will no doubt give you plenty of discussion topics and food for thought.

Following the Rate Cut… Tuesday, September 25, 2007

As we wrote in our post following the rate cut (link),things are probably going to get worse before they get better. But where does this leave us today; is the US heading towards a recession? We are not sure that a recession is around the corner quite yet but there are some alarming signs that we are definitely going to see the economy slowing down:

  • fear of increasing unemployment rate
  • decrease in new home constructions
  • decrease of new car sales
  • consumer confidence decreasing

Having said this, we would like to remind readers that recessions are part of normal economic cycles and that it would be naive to think that they will not happen. Looking back, we have had roughly the same number of recessions than periods of economic growth, even though recession are shorter in span. What is important, is to make sure that investors are aware of the economic climate and that they invest accordingly. As we already said, do not mistake last week’s strength in the markets as a sign that the Bulls are back for good! Be prudent and focus on capital preservation instead of speculating.

A Breath of Fresh Air Friday, September 21, 2007

We recently came across the webcast of Middleby’s (MIDD) presentation at the Roth Conference – you’ll need to register, it’s free and well worth it.

CEO Selim Bassoul’s presentation is a breath of fresh air in today’s ‘politically correct’ corporate world… despite being the CEO, Bassoul keeps on sounding like an enlightened and energetic young manager of a newly born start-up. He is open, honest, blunt and inspiring. We strongly encourage you to find the time to listen to this presentation.

Our readers will no doubt remember when we wrote about Goldman Sachs (GS) and that readers should stop kicking themselves for not having bought shares in the past and take advantage of the fact that the market correction was giving us the possibility of picking up shares cheap – at a multiple of under 10… this was a unique opportunity to invest in a great company with extremely solid fundamentals and a money making machine with an impeccable track record and pedigree.

Well, earning are out and indeed, Goldman did it again….

  • Net Income Rises 79%
  • Net Revenue Surged 63%

Fed Acknowledges Troubles… Wednesday, September 19, 2007

We have all followed Mr. Bernanke’s stance and the fact that both the funds rate AND the discount rate were slashed by a half point should raise some questions; especially why has the Fed accommodated the demands of mortgage lenders, brokerages and home builders?

These cuts are extremely unusual and seeing that – in general – the Fed hesitates to side with requests, as they are usually already factored into financial markets, this decision should highlight that we are indeed facing a severe crisis and that things are probably going to get worse before they get better.

US markets responded extremely well and Europe has followed but are we sure that with this cut, the Fed has managed to put everything right? We would love for this to be the case but unfortunately, we fail to see how the rate cut will address the underlying liquidity crisis, credit crunch, mortgage defaults and so on…

Again, we encourage investors to remain focused on their investment strategy and long-term goals… do not try and participate or guess this volatility which does not discriminate between well run and poorly manage companies. Furthermore, a closer look at the rally both in US and Europe shows that the bulk of the rise has been pushed by shorts scrambling to covering their positions.

Stay tuned for more….

Liar’s Poker, M. Lewis Friday, September 14, 2007

Michael Lewis shares his experiences as a bond trader at Salomon Brothers in the 80s. The reader gets to follow him through his unorthodox way of getting hired, to trainee, to geek, to Michael and finally, to being a Big Swinging Dick on the trading floor!

Lewis is a really good writer, he manages to make you feel as though you were there with him. Not only does he paint a picture of all of the characters but he actually find a way to let you have a peek into what was going in their minds and driving them. If you enjoyed watching the movie ‘Wall Street’, this should be on your MUST READ list.

Another interesting aspect of the book is that, not only does her offer an insight into Salomon, the Street, the high profile figures, the traders and so on but he manages to do this in an extremely funny way – the book is hilarious.

As the back of the book states: Funny, frightening, breathless and heartless, Liar’s Poker is a tale of hysterical greed and ambition set in an obsessed, enclosed world.

Enjoy!
