The following months are going to continue to be volatile and – as our readers know – we do not recommend trying to call the market. Having said this and following on from yesterday’s article, we feel that it is time to start to take advantage of some interesting opportunities.

Would be interested if we told you that you could buy shares in a solid business trading with a P/E ratio of 3.57, excellent financials and paying over 9% divided yield? Well you can, take a look at Precision Drilling Trust (PDS).

This is the first company in a new portfolio that we will start to assemble using the buying in thirds methodology.

Please read the following links to see what we think of PDS:

Buying in Thirds Thursday, November 15, 2007

As we have written time and time again, the Enterprising Investor should take a long-term view to investing and profit from volatility.

On way of dealing with this is by using an investing method know as ‘Buying in Thirds’. What does this mean? Well, practically speaking:

  1. Identify the stock you want to buy
  2. Decided how big a position you want to take, how much capital you are going to put into this pick
  3. Divide the capital by 3
  4. Proceed to buy though 3 separate transactions

You never know how a stock is going to behave and the reasoning is that as soon as you identify this stock you should open position and then you can sit back and see how it behaves, taking advantage of volatility to either move more money into the position or avoid a costly mistake if you had invested 100% of the sum you had initially committed.

Tomorrow we will start to discuss using this strategy with some of the companies we have talked about in the past.

It is definitely and very good source of information and a good place to stop!

Time for Buffett Tuesday, November 13, 2007

Is Buffett about to make another killing?

In the current economic climate and market turmoil, over 45 billion dollars in cash and a triple-A credit rating can go a long way. Rumors are circulating that major bond insurers are desperately calling Berkshire to ask for help through their reinsurance businesses and this wouldn’t be the first time Buffett could profit from using his experience and financial weight to make a huge profit.

As Buffett often says, he knows the insurance business and is willing to back exceptionally large contracts… naturally, as he is probably one of the only hopes, he can pretty much ask any price.

Coeur D’Alene moving higher Thursday, November 8, 2007

Silver prices have started to move sharply higher and Coeur D’Alene (CDE) is up over 25% since we talked about this stock back in June (original post: link).

As we already discussed, this company gives investors a change to participate in the inevitable increase of silver prices due to the fact that the world has nearly run out of silver and it is also interesting as a hedge against the economic downturn and current market conditions.

For an interesting interview on the future of silver, please see the ‘Investors Pumping Silver’ video interview from TheStreet.com: here.

How high can Berkshire go? Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Berkshire (BRK-B) shares are up over 24% since we wrote about them and the attractive share price back in July in our post on Mohnish Pabrai (link).

The question that people keep on asking is just how high can the shares go? But if you talk to anyone about their experiences with the share, most people will tell you that at first, they thought that they would just hold off and wait for better prices but that they eventually ended up buying at higher prices since the price just kept on going up.

Taking into account current market conditions and turmoil, we can think of a lot of worse places for your money. Furthermore, taking into account the fact that at current prices, the ratios are looking better than the past year averages, we see no reason why we couldn’t see – at least – another 10% increase.

The end of the US Dollar… Tuesday, November 6, 2007

As already discussed in the past:

  • U.S. Dollar is trading well below its previous low of all time
  • Gold has pierced the $800-per-ounce level
  • Crude oil has surged to $94 per barrel
  • Foreign stock markets are surging

And on top of this, Gisele has just taken a stance against the Dollar! Apparently, she is refusing to be paid in the currency and prefers Euro!

Will this be the last straw? :-)
